Bar Joists
Bar joists are manufactured in several different “series”. Each series is designed for specific spanning and loading purposes.
On plans, bar joists are designated by a three-part code. If you see the term 18K6 on a plan, this tells you that the joist is 18” in depth, it is a K series joist and that its top and bottom chords are identified by the chord section number of 6.
K series - Common open web joists - These are standard sized
joists for typical applications. K’s span from 8’ to 60’ across and have
depths of 8” to 30”. The chord section numbers run from 1 to 12. The
smallest K joist is 8K1 and spans up to 16’. The largest is 30K12 and
spans from 30’ to 60’.

CS series - Constant Shear - “Constant shear” joists are for
non uniform and concentrated loads. They have joist depths of from 10”
to 30” and chord numbers from 1 to 5.

LH series - Longspan - LH’s span from 25’ to 96’ (the K’s
can go to a maximum of 60’). Their depths are from 18” to 48”. Chord
sections are from 2 to 17.

DLH series - Deep Longspan - These are even longer than longspans.
They can span from 89’ to 144’ and have depths of 52” to 72”. Chord numbers
run from no. 10 up to no. 19.

SLH series - Super Longspan - Super’s are even deeper than
DLH’s and can go almost twice as long as the huge deep longspans. These
gigantic joists span from 111’ to 240’. Their depths are from 80” to
120” (that’s 10’ deep). The chords are from no. 15 to no. 25.
